by Jaume Plensa

Location : Installed at the piazza in front of The Shard and Shard Place by The News Building and in front of London Bridge mainline train station.

WE (2021) comprises of 2 metal figures made from sculpted letters and characters from 7 different alphabets, representing the universality of being human and the cells of the body.

The works face each other as if in dialogue. One anchored to the ground and the other suspended in the air. The text and the hollow structures provide framed views of the spaces within and the environment beyond including the Shard Quarter.

This is the first work in London created by Plensa for a public space, commissioned by The Shard’s owners, The State of Qatar and Sellar and curated by Futurecity with an art advisory panel.

The multi award-winning artist has been exhibited world-wide including Fundación Joan Miro – Barcelona (1996) Paris and Malmo, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the UK (2011).
