Bascule Chamber Concerts

Location: Tower Bridge Exhibition

September 22, 2017 - September 24, 2017

Following last year’s sell out concert series in the Bascule Chamber at Tower Bridge, composer and curator Iain Chambers returns to fill the atmospheric subterranean Victorian space with a brand new programme as part of Totally Thames 2017.

This year’s concerts showcase three major new works, alongside commissioned spoken word performances, and an immersive sound walk exploring London’s greatest hidden space. Click here for more details and booking.

The programme includes a contemporary response to Handel’s Water Music by Langham Research Centre, 300 years after Handel’s famous work was premiered on the Thames. This ground-breaking new piece will see the group ‘play’ the sound of the Bridge’s river and road traffic live, using hydrophones in the river and contact microphones on Tower Bridge itself.

Clarinettist Kate Romano will perform alongside Langham Research Centre in a new composition for oscillators and clarinet. Kate will also perform Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint a rhythmically intricate work by the American composer.

Award-winning Franco-Cameroonian singer Coco Mbassi will perform a new work in the Bridge’s Accumulator Chamber, imagining the conversations happening on board boats carrying immigrants.

Plus poet Kayo Chingonyi will create and perform new spoken word for this unique space. Kayo has received   the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize and was shortlisted for the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize. His new collection Kumkanda is out now.

Supported by the PRS for Music Foundation and using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
