Location: Bermondsey Project Space
June 6, 2023 - June 17, 2023
The first London solo exhibition by David Oliver is set to open at Bermondsey Project Space, coinciding with London Festival of Architecture 2023.
As an artist living and working thousands of miles away from home, London-based David Oliver has built a practice embedded in personal explorations and lived experiences. In a process akin to nesting, Oliver subtly alters and adapts the environment he finds himself occupying through installation, sculpture, photography and papiers découpés.
Motifs of sash windows, curtains that obscure interior spaces, and pathways into the unknown recur throughout this new body of work. They obstruct and they withhold, but they also intervene to tell the story of an artist who is not done repatriating joy and beauty from the perils within.
As part of the London Festival of Architecture, these familiar icons of the domestic invite the viewer to consider their own relationship to their environment. There is a resemblance of what somebody, somewhere, has experienced before. In common is a shared interest in a characteristic event, an enduring sensation, and a silent spatial contemplation of parallel forms.
As a photographer and designer, Oliver’s work has appeared in the major magazines and international publications. His work has previously been exhibited in London, Sydney, Cape Town, Madrid and Dublin, and examples of his work are held in both public and private collections.
