Strephon, half fairy and half Arcadian shepherd, is in love with Phyllis, a ward of court. But her guardian, the Lord Chancellor, doesn’t approve of the match. He would much rather marry her to an Earl or Duke – or even better, to himself. Broken-hearted, Strephon calls on the aid of his mother Iolanthe and her fairy companions. But when Phyllis sees her lover talking to the unaging Iolanthe, she suspects his intentions. In turn, the Queen of Fairyland threatens the House of Lords with the ultimate punishment – loss of their exalted rank.
This hilarious comic opera sets the concrete world of Westminster politics up against a fantastical world of magic and wonder. Still bitingly satirical and relevant today, Iolanthe is nevertheless a tender love story at its heart.
