Making the Shard with Renzo Piano Building Workshops

Location: The Shard

May 5, 2017 - May 5, 2017

Part of London Craft Week 2017

The architects behind London’s tallest landmark discuss making one of the world’s most recognisable buildings. A rare opportunity to hear from the architect and engineers as they discuss the challenges they faced, as well as viewing the original models and designs of the building.

The making of the Shard required very particular techniques, including the top-down technique for the tower’s structure, the first time the method had been attempted on a building of this scale.

Joost and an engineer will be discussing how they overcame the logistical difficulties and site constraints of a major building project in central London, as well as the efficient technology used for energy conservation. From using extra-white glass to give the tower a lightness and sensitivity to the ever-changing sky around it, this talk will explore how the facade was one of the most important elements of the building.
