New Permanent Engine Rooms Exhibition

A new permanent exhibition in Tower Bridge’s Victorian Engine Rooms launched 24th April 2017 From this April, step inside Tower Bridge to discover the unsung heroes who have kept an icon in motion for over 120 years. From coal stokers to cooks, clerks and engineers, uncover the fascinating human stories of the people who once worked behind the scenes at the Bridge. Immerse yourself in this atmospheric space, where oral histories, never before displayed photographs and new films will explore the lives and livelihoods behind a national treasure. Complementing the personal histories on display for the first time in the Engine Rooms is our newest feature: the ‘Walk of Fame’. Linking Tower Bridge’s imposing South Tower to its Victorian Engine Rooms lies a pathway of plaques celebrating some of the workers from the Bridge’s 122 year history, each carefully selected to illustrate the diversity of roles behind the Bridge. Commemorating the lives and labour of these individuals, the ‘Walk of Fame’ plaques have been designed by students from the City of London Academy Southwark and the London Sculpture Workshop who took inspiration from Tower Bridge’s stories and its architectural flourishes.
