Published on 11th June 2019

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance: Fluid Boundaries  Fri 14 June, 12.30-12.45pm & 1.30-1.45pm Working with professional dancers, architects and the local community, leading British contemporary dance company, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and architecture practice, ft’work, explore the intricacies and architecture of Guy’s Courtyard at King’s College London in London Bridge. Through dance and movement they are taking over the space to explore complex physical, social and cultural boundaries. Participants are invited to join the community ensemble during their lunch hour  to challenge perceptions about a space they see and walk through every day. Fluid Boundaries is a collaboration with ft’work for the London Festival of Architecture. The project will be overseen by Shobana and architect Clare Richards, the founder of ft’work. Participants from Oaklands School and Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets and Green Candle Dance Company will work closely with company dancers and ft’work architects to create two inter-generational, site-responsive dance works. ft’work is a not-for-profit architectural practice committed to creating thriving communities and ensuring that social principles are adopted as a fundamental component of good design and development. LFA Walkshops

Published on 20th May 2019

We all know how easy it is to snap a great view, especially when an opportunity is offered from the top of a tall building, but many of us find it far harder to capture it in a drawing or a sketch. Capturing the essence of a skyline in a drawing or a sketch while on the move is something more to accomplish. We are often limited in looking only from the ground up, but the London Bridge area provides a wealth of taller buildings that offer unique angles to observe the boundary that is the skyline. We will begin with a drawing of a skyline view and then walk into the skyline, drawing as we go. Saturday 22nd June 2019 / Prompt start at 11:30 – Book Thursday, 27 June 2019/ 18:00 – Book   The London Festival of Architecture celebrates London as the global hub for architecture. LFA Guided Walk: Built and natural

From carefully planted trees and well-maintained flowerbeds to grass growing between paving stones or moss on a wall, nature is everywhere in the city, softening and subverting the angles and planes of the built environment. Street trees, roadside flower borders and the creation of green walls and green roof spaces all contribute to bringing nature more into the area. Their value is hugely important, especially for public health, and for providing amenity to residents and workers alike. People’s understanding of the complicated connections of our natural world, and how we are part of it, has grown significantly in recent years. Team London Bridge has worked hard to support community initiative and to invite the natural world into previous industrial areas. The area has ‘pocket parks’ or legacy gardens and churchyards, some of which are almost invisible (obscured by railway lines, arches and buildings) or difficult to access as one needs to cross busy roads. Andrew Logan

Andrew Logan: No Boundaries

Artists and creative spirits began to settle in the London Bridge area in the early 1970s and their influence on the area is clear to see today. One of these early pioneers was sculptural artist Andrew Logan. A key figure in London’s cultural life, Andrew’s London Bridge journey has taken him from the pre-renovated warehouses of Butler’s Wharf, to his more recent residence in the Glasshouse on Melior Place. One of Britain’s principal sculptural artists, he challenges convention, mixes media and plays with our artistic values. Sculptor, jeweller, performance artist, trained architect, and founder of Alternative Miss World, Andrew Logan has ignored conventional boundaries to produce a body of work that delights us today. Andrew will take us through his life’s works and influences and reflect on his relationship with the London Bridge area over the past five decades. LFA Talk: Public, private, open, closed

Much of the activity on the ground floor level of the buildings in the area has been determined by their use, and as these uses have changed over time, the spaces and routes that connect them, have fluctuated in popularity. Beyond the City boundary, and with London Bridge itself as the key access to the City, pubs, theatres and leisure dens proliferated, and over time these have been controlled by licensing. With the renovation of London Bridge and its railway arches (in parts the ‘Low Line’) as well as the development of More London, there is a resurgence in theatre and leisure venues which has conspired to significant changes in ownership and ground floor rental values, and their uses. We will look at where and when we can cross boundaries, and who is trying to keep whom away, both now and in the past. Inadvertently, the built environment often includes obstacles and barriers for those less able to get about on foot, and we will explore how these have been overcome.
