Bascule Chamber Concerts

Published on 27th July 2018

Following last year’s sell out concert series in the Bascule Chamber, composer and curator Iain Chambers returns to fill the atmospheric subterranean Victorian space at Tower Bridge with a brand new programme. Featuring newly commissioned vocal works performed by the Marian Consort, a dynamic internationally-renowned young early music vocal ensemble, recognised for their fresh approach and innovative presentation. The Marian Consort will perform classic renaissance pieces, some exploring the phenomenon of voice-hearing. There will also be new site-specific music, alongside specially-commissioned spoken word performances from Rae Levine; plus celebrated tabla player Kuljit Bhamra MBE will perform an exclusive solo set. The Bascule Chamber houses Tower Bridge’s huge counterweights during lifting. When the bridge is at rest, this dramatic brick-lined space stands empty. These unmissable, atmospheric concerts provide a unique way of experiencing one of Victorian engineering’s greatest feats.
